Swinton worked for the New York Times and was called “The Dean of His Profession” by other newsmen, who admired him greatly. Asked to give a toast to America’s “independent press” before the prestigious New York Press Club in 1953, he made this candid confession:
“There is no such thing, at this date of the world’s history, as an independent press. You know it and I know it.
“There is not one of you who dares to write your honest opinions, and if you did, you know beforehand that it would never appear in print. I am paid weekly for keeping my honest opinions out of the paper I am connected with. Others of you are paid similar salaries for similar things, and any of you who would be so foolish as to write honest opinions would be out on the streets looking for another job.
“If I allowed my honest opinions to appear in one issue of my paper, before twenty-four hours my occupation would be gone.
“The business of the journalist is to destroy the truth, to lie outright, to pervert, to vilify, to fawn at the feet of mammon, and to sell the country for his daily bread.
“You know it and I know it, and what folly is this toasting an independent press.
“We are the tools and vassals of the rich men behind the scenes. We are the jumping jacks, they pull the strings and we dance. Our talents, our possibilities and our lives are all the property of other men.

And of course they have remained intellectual prostitutes to this day. Those who work for the corporate media will always be professional liars. All the major propaganda rags — the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post,Time magazine, Newsweek, U.S. News & World Report and others — all are mouthpieces of the
corporate/banking plutocracy
which actually runs this country — “the rich men behind the scenes”. And almost all of the lesser papers and periodicals follow the lead of these rags.
With the consolidation of ownership of all the mass-media in the last 20+ years, the plutocracy’s grip has gotten much tighter throughout the nation. At the national level and at most state and large city levels, there is no free press in America. There is no honest television news or mainstream radio news. It’s all owned — and tightly controlled — by a few ultra-wealthy corporations. And these corporations are all owned and controlled by Jewish-American Zionists, as Israel Shamir and many others have pointed out.

An interesting exercise which demonstrates the censorship of the so-called “free press”...
If you use major search engines like Google or Yahoo! to search for web pages that contain the term “American terrorism” you’ll find thousands. A query for “state terrorism” will return tens of thousands.
Sharpening the focus to “American state terrorism” will find about two or three hundred pages (as of this writing)...
(Note to new users: Be sure to put the terms "American terrorism", "state terrorism" or "American state terrorism" within "quotes". That makes search engines look for the words as a single term, rather than as two or three separate words.)

... Now if you’ve tried that, see what happens when you search for those three terms in the mainstream “news”.

AP, UPI and Reuters, for example, are some of the dominant wire services in the English language — AP and UPI in the U.S., and Reuters in the UK. They have traditionally supplied newspapers around the world with very professional propaganda crafted to look like honest “news” stories. In fact, literally all of the mainstream wire services, newspapers, magazines and television networks — AP, UPI, Reuters, ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox News, CNN, Time, Newsweek, U.S. News & World Report, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post — all of them are dominated by the state propaganda of the American, Israeli and British governments. Anyone within these “news” organizations who dares to dispute the Official View is simply fired, just as John Swinton said.
It’s no wonder therefore, that as of this writing, every single search I’ve ever done of the mainstream propaganda services (through Yahoo! News) for “American state terrorism” or “British state terrorism” has found precisely zero articles.
If a rare article contains the words “American terrorism” consecutively, it is almost never about American state terrorism, but about American individuals — such as someone accused of terrorism: “American terrorism suspect Herbert Hapless was arraigned today in Timbuktu...”; or some U.S. government shill: “American terrorism expert William Wily insinuated today in Washington DC...” Similar results are found with the terms “Israeli terrorism” and “British terrorism”.
There are occasionally a few articles for “state terrorism.” Lately some of them have actually been about real state terrorism — Israeli state terrorism. But in this case the only people using the term seriously are the surviving Palestinian victims and Moslem commentators around the world. So of course they don’t count, right?
Usually, however, articles which contain the term “state terrorism” are merely full of the classic hypocrisy of American/British officialdom (and their well-paid puppets), slandering favorite scapegoats like the Cubans, Serbians, Libyans, Iraqis or other traditional victims of American/British state terrorism.
When a rare story contains the words “Israeli state terrorism”, this very legitimate term is almost always belittled and portrayed as propaganda rather than the bloody reality it truly is. The mainstream American media always portrays the carnage in Palestine as if it were a battle between fairly equal forces, rather than the
totally unequal slaughter
it is in fact. It will be obvious to anyone with half a brain that Israel has an overwhelming advantage in weapons and firepower. That overwhelming advantage in firepower goes a long way toward explaining why Israel is also the overwhelming aggressor.
These search results demonstrate very graphically the propagandistic nature of all mainstream “news” — “Only other nations are terroristic, not America!” “Those grubby Axis Of Evil nations are just jealous of our incredible Freedom!” “Her Royal Majesty’s Britain would never stoop so low! Unthinkable! We’re civilised!” “We Israelis are perfectly innocent Victims of terrorism! We, The Chosen People, never, ever commit terrorism on all those subhuman goyim! As Prime Minister Begin said, they’re all just ‘two-legged beasts’, so they deserve to be slaughtered by our American-financed, state-of-the-art tanks, attack helicopters and F-16 jets! We’re only defending ourselves, nothing more!”
But as far as all corporate McNews organizations are concerned, there simply is No Such Thing as “American state terrorism”, “British state terrorism” or “Israeli state terrorism”. And “state terrorism” in general?...
(Shhh! Not so loud! Don’t give the public any ideas! We don’t want them to even think in terms of “state” terrorism. They might start to get a clue!)
Most American/British journalists and editors can’t see the forest for the trees. Intentional or not, they are propaganda agents of the corporate state.
John Swinton’s characterization was perfect: these unprincipled hacks are literally intellectual prostitutes.
But just to maintain the all-important appearance of a “Free Press”, our corporate plutocracy allows sufficiently old stories of American terrorism to make an occasional (brief) showing in the shallow, three-ring circus of Mainstream McNews. For instance, half a bloody century after the fact, three rare journalists with human consciences were permitted to “break” the story of U.S. Army atrocities at
No Gun Ri
in Korea.
American state terrorism has continued to be a major reality in this suffering world from that day to this. Yet the corporate newsmedia would have you believe it doesn’t even exist.

Although the mainstream wire services (AP, Reuters and ABCNews) which Yahoo! News uses are merely state propaganda organs, the people behind the Yahoo! directory itself still defend freedom of speech — in spite of the growing fascism of the U.S. government since September 11, 2001.
I’ve seen claims on a couple of good sites that Yahoo! has refused to list one of their pages. But all I know about Yahoo! personally is that if they didn’t defend freedom of speech to some extent they wouldn’t still have a listing for this site. They would have caved in to fascist U.S. government censorship the way Lycos (Tripod and Angelfire) did when it deleted mirrors of this site in October and December 2001.
Yahoo! is the world’s biggest Web directory and has a richly varied database because it is still relatively free of the suffocating domination of the mega-corporations. So far Yahoo! appears to me to be honestly representative of what’s really on the World Wide Web — with links to some very non-corporate sources of information.
In fact it was by following links on Yahoo! in April 1999 that I discovered the brutal atrocities America and NATO were committing against the
Yugoslavian civilian people.
The internet also revealed that all the NATO government spokespeople and mainstream “news” services were routinely attempting to cover up those atrocities. Those who had access to the Web at that time — and who actually cared to know the truth — got a lesson in ugly political reality they will never forget. The 1999 American/NATO terror campaign was the first such mass-murder where America’s war crimes, and the government/mass-media’s dirty lies, were all instantly, repeatedly and graphically revealed to the whole world.
Yahoo! was one of the many sites that did their moral duty by providing links to alternative sources of news, so that you could discover what the “other side” was actually saying and revealing. Imagine that... actually hearing from those who dispute the Official View of Uncle Sham and his harem of corporate media whores! Scary. Sounds almost like — dare I say it? — democracy and free speech! (shudder). To my neophyte amazement the internet made it possible to discover what the mainstream mass-media was censoring and even outright lying about.
And of course the internet continues to reveal the world of information which the mainstream corporate/government mass-media is endlessly trying to cover up.
Yahoo! will continue to be the world’s greatest Web directory only as long as it remains independent. Considering the profoundly immoral mindset that has always dominated corporate America, it seems to me that Yahoo! has been run by a group of relatively conscientious people — so far. But with the financial losses currently afflicting all “dot-com” companies, the loss of whatever independence Yahoo! still has becomes a dire possibility. If it is devoured by some corporate media monster like AOL-Time Warner, Viacom or Disney Co. that will be the death of it as an honest directory. It will then become just another soulless corporate propaganda/disinformation tool of the fascist plutocracy.
But Yahoo! is still a great directory now — use it while you can!
