khalid khan Jan 18, 2004 I am M. Khalid Khan in Peshawar Pakistan.I built the vj 24 from plans which I got from volmer jensen himself when he was there.I followed the plans exactly so it turned out to be a vj24 alright. No surprises there. From your surprise it seems the vj 24 is thought to be extinct.I made just one change.I extended the boom a few feet and dispensed with the alum angles as shown on the plans. The reason it turned out so heavy was the thicker tubes. My friend also built one but had a modified fuselage and two pusher robin 4 stroke engines. That one did taxi though. Its top speed flat out on the ground was a miserly 30 mph.You cant hurt yourself if you cant get off the ground is a good lesson to remember. So design accordingly! Its a very clean aircraft to build.I dont mean drag wise but there is no messy glue, dust or layups.I once timed myself and took exactly 16 hours to build an aieleron ato z which included watching a free aerobatic display over the house by a mashak aircraft. With the span and area of a c-172 and 1/5 the weight it must be a delight to fly on calm evenings.I am surprised why there are no vj24s around considering all the t6 tubes and kt100 engines lying around.I really envy you people. It would be in the same category as a gypsy, woodhopper and very cheap.Yes I took some pictures but they are not doing me any good. I am still puzzled why a static test does not answer all structural questions relating to the wing.As for the bleriot wings coming off inspite of the wings being static loaded.Could that be flutter or an unrecoverable dive which would be bad for any wing.If I mount this aircraft on a truck and simulate flight would that give me any answers. Can anyone tell me if it is possible to infer an approximate safe flight speed for this aircraft from a static load test. Regards.Khalid. I have VJ24W plans.Got them from Mr.Volmer Jensen himself in 1984 and I intend to keep them. I did build it in 1990 to the covering stage but used material with unknown properties.I used larger and thicker spar tubes. .I posted a picture of the uncovered frame on VULA where one knowledgable aviator commented it was better built then Mr.jensens prototype! I static loaded the frame to 1800 pounds where the root c fittings ang bolts were bent and deformed but the wing held.I increased size of c fittings to 3/16 thickness hard aluminum and 8mm bolts. Then I got into the engine part of the muddle.Got the 800cc 1/2vw running with a 64kg thrust but then one of my more ' knowledgable' aviator friends advised me not to go any further as it would probably be unsafe because of material substitutions. I can comment on the construction.First wing half took me 1 month.2nd half 2 weeks! Aieleron takes 15 hours including many tea breaks! For control surface ribs I used hardwood forms which is extra work but they came out fine even though I used 1mm sheet because of poor material. I think its an easy construction.Best place to build it is USA.The 4 inch 035 wall boom and 21/2 035 spars are expensive. But the finished machine should be worth it.It looks small buts its infact Big.I guess it would become airborne on a breath of fresh air!!!! I think the vintage Yamaha KT100 engine is still available in your country new!! Regards Khalid Khan Peshawar Pakistan
